Utilities

The Division of Utilities sustains wellbeing through essential services by providing clean and safe drinking water, treating wastewater to protect the public and waterways, and developing and implementing sustainable solutions. Comprised of the South Bend Water Works, the Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Organic Resources facility, the Division of Utilities serves the residents of South Bend as well as some residents outside of city limits.

Pay Your South Bend Utility Bill

South Bend Municipal Utilities issues a monthly bill that includes charges for trash collection, water, and sewer services. Account holders can make payments or get assistance at the City Service Center in City Hall, located at 215 S. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., or by calling 311. Note: All payments are due by 5 pm on the due date shown on your bill.

  • Pay Online at utilities.southbendin.gov
    • Pay your utility bill online using a MasterCard, Discover or Visa credit/debit card at utilities.southbendin.gov. You can either create an online account or use Quick Pay on the home page to make a one-time payment—no login required. There is no additional fee for online payments.
    • Account holders can also download billing statements through their online account.
    • There is no additional fee for this service.
    • South Bend Municipal Utilities is not affiliated with any online third party paying agents. Make sure you understand the terms of service before utilizing any third party paying agents; South Bend Municipal Utilities is not responsible for any delays in payments that are made through such outside services.

  • Pay By Phone
    • Call 574.235.9236 and follow the instructions on the integrated voice response (IVR) system.
    • There is no additional fee for this service.

  • In-Person (City Hall Service Center is located at 215 S. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.)
    • Lobby hours are 7:30 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Payment Kiosks 
    • La Casa De Amistad (Located near the front desk)
      • Address: 3423 S. Michigan St.
      • Hours:
        Monday – Friday: 9am to noon and 1pm to 6pm
    • Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Center (Located to the right of the lobby entrance)
      • Address: 1522 Linden Ave.
      • Hours:
        Monday – Friday: 9am – 9pm
        Saturday: 9am – 5pm
        Sunday: 9am – 2pm
    • Kiosks do not give change and cannot accept cashier’s checks or money orders.
  • CheckFreePay
    • Make a payment in-person at 40-plus locations across the city where CheckFreePay is offered, such as
      Dollar General, Speedway, Walmart and more. Find in-person payment locations at checkfreepay.com.
  • Automatic Bank Draft
    • Download an application for Automatic Bank Draft bill payment.
    • Pick up an automatic bank draft application at the City Service Center, located at 215 S. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.

Additional Payment Information:

  • Starter or counter checks will not be accepted for payments at any time.
  • Payments will not be accepted for shut off accounts left in the night drop box or mail unless money order is used.
