Drinking Water Quality
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires water systems to supply their customers with an annual drinking water quality report called the Water Quality Report. This report was designed for Americans to make practical, knowledgeable decisions about their health and their environment. South Bend Water Works’ Water Quality Report is distributed with the June utility bills each year. In 2023, Water Works was 100% in compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act Regulations.

South Bend Water Works operates eight different water production facilities throughout the community. The City optimizes water production from three filtration plants to take advantage of the iron and manganese removal ability. Other facilities are used when there is a high demand for water.
Help the City Identify Your Service Line
The City of South Bend distributes clean, safe drinking water to homes and businesses every day that meets all state and federal water quality standards. As part of new Environmental Protection Agency regulations, public water utilities are now required to identify all drinking water service line materials that connect from City water mains to the customer’s home or business. In order to meet this requirement, the City needs your help verifying your service line. To report the material of your water service line, visit southbendin.gov/serviceline and click the red button that says, “Take the City Service Line Survey.”

Wellhead Protection
The City of South Bend gets its entire water supply from ground water wells, which is why it’s important to prevent this water from being contaminated from pollution. Indiana’s Wellhead Protection Rule (327 IAC 8-4.1) requires all public water supplies using ground water wells to maintain a Wellhead Protection Plan (WHPP). The WHPP focuses on protecting the water supply by preventing pollutants from entering the ground in areas around wells.
