For customers outside South Bend city limits (including five-digit South Bend addresses), the fee is $11 per cubic yard. Residential customers will need to show proof of address, such as a driver’s license. Commercial customers will be asked for the address of their business.

Only organic material such as grass clippings and leaves are accepted at Organic Resources. These items are processed into compost and mulch, which are made available to city residents.

Below is a list of items that Organic Resources does and does NOT accept:

Accepts:

Branches, brush, garden and grass clippings, leaves, logs, and wood chips.

Does Not Accept:

Dirt, sod, concrete, bricks, asphalt, rocks, metal, stumps/stump grindings and trash of any kind.

Guidelines for Wood, Brush and Tree Limbs

Below are the guidelines that residents are asked to follow for wood, brush and tree limbs :

▪ Separation of Materials: Mixed loads of logs and wood chips will no longer be accepted. These materials must be separated before delivery.

▪ Size Requirements: All materials must be cut to a maximum length of 8 feet (96 inches) and a diameter not exceeding 2 feet (24 inches). Any items that exceed these dimensions will be rejected to avoid damage to our processing equipment.

▪ Treated Wood: Not accepted at the facility.

All loads will be inspected by our staff, who reserve the right to reject any materials that do not meet the guidelines. Rejected materials will be loaded back onto your vehicle.

Compost and Mulch

Compost is available March through November. Mulch is available April through October. However, due to high demand, compost and mulch may not be available at certain times.

Compost and mulch are available free of charge, if self-loading, or for a fee if assistance is needed. Those self-loading must bring their own shovels and containers to collect the material. To get compost and mulch after business hours, use the self-loading area outside the fence of the facility.

Loading of compost and mulch is available to any South Bend city resident for the following rates:

  • Up to four yards at a time: $5 per cubic yard + tax
  • More than four yards: $9 per cubic yard for all yards, including the first four + tax

Loading is only available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. [Note: Loading ends an hour before the facility closes].

Organic Resources accepts cash (nothing larger than $20 bills), Visa, Mastercard and Discover. Organic Resources does not accept American Express.
