December 23, 2023 – The City of South Bend’s Fall Leaf Pickup program will resume on Wednesday, December 24, weather permitting. The program was temporarily suspended earlier this month due to heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures. With warmer temperatures and melting snow, crews are now able to restart operations, however, the program can get suspended again if inclement weather returns.
For crews to collect leaves, they must be free of snow, and temperatures need to stay above freezing so equipment can operate safely. Wet conditions can also affect pickup because saturated leaves tend to clog the equipment.
Leaf pickup will resume in Zone 7 and continue as long as weather allows. Crews will collect leaves street by street and complete one zone before moving to the next.
Important Guidelines for Residents:
Avoid Parking on Piles: Vehicles should not be parked on or in front of leaf piles along the curb.
Set Out Time: Leaves should be raked to the tree lawn area (NOT into the street) by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled pickup date.
Keep Piles Clear: Leaves must be free of sticks, trash, and other debris.
