The City of South Bend is set to officially open its new City Hall at 215 S. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd on Monday, October 13.
“After the City team’s years of planning and hard work, I am thrilled to welcome residents to South Bend’s new City Hall,” said Mayor James Mueller. “This consolidation of departments reflects our commitment to better government, achieving efficiencies and establishing a new city service center for residents.”
The City purchased the former South Bend Community School Corporation administration building in October 2022 after SBCSC announced their plans to move into the Brown Community Learning Center building. In 2024, the City awarded the renovation contract to Larson-Danielson Construction Co.
All City offices previously housed in the County-City Building will be located at City Hall, along with the Building Department, 311 Customer Service and Water Works Billing Office. City Hall will also host all public city meetings in City Hall’s Council Chamber’s located on the third floor starting in November. Any meeting happening in October will still be held at the County-City Building. Residents are reminded to check the location on public meeting notices to direct you to the correct place during this transition.
Residents seeking County services such as tax payments, immunizations, birth certificates, and other related needs should continue visiting the County-City Building, as these services are not relocating.
“This new City Hall marks a major step forward in how we serve our residents,” said Public Works Director Eric Horvath. “With services under one roof, we’re streamlining operations and making it easier for residents to access the services they need.”
At City Hall, residents can access the new City Customer Service Center in the lobby to better serve them with quick and convenient access to a variety of services, such as paying their utility bill, building permits, program information, and other City Services. The City Customer Service Center is made up of 311 liaisons who will interact with residents in-person to assist with their requests. Self-service kiosks are also available for routine service needs and payments.
The City Service Center also offers a new scheduling system, where residents can conveniently book an appointment ahead of their visit to City Hall. This scheduling system will allow residents to make same-day appointments or appointments in advance and will provide real-time updates before and upon arrival.
“With the opening of the new City Service Center at City Hall, we have created a space that is both efficient and welcoming,” said Director of Customer Service & Success, Cathleen Sutherland. “We have been intentional to ensure every South Bend resident feels seen, heard, and cared for.”
Residents visiting City Hall have access to free 2-hour parking at the City Hall Garage, also known as Wayne Street Garage, right next door at the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Wayne Street. Free 2-hour street parking is also available throughout downtown.
When entering City Hall, all visitors will need to go through a security check at the main entrance. Security will consist of a metal detector screening, and bags may be subject to search.
City Hall will be open Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. and is closed on Saturday’s and Sunday’s. City Hall will be closed to the public on the following federal holidays: New Year’s Day, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, and Christmas Day.
