The Division of Streets, which includes Streets, Sewers, and Traffic & Lighting, maintains 1,276 travel lane miles of street, 700 miles of sewer, 2,400 streetlights and 160 traffic signals. Major functions of the division include overall street, sewer, traffic signal and street light maintenance, snow removal, alley grading and leaf pickup.

Streets
Streets repairs and maintains the city’s street network of 1,220 travel lane miles. Maintenance activities include paving and patching in the summer to plowing snow in the winter. The team at Streets is also responsible for the grading of city alleys. In the fall, Streets picks up leaves raked by property owners along the curb to assist the City in its efforts to convert organic waste into compost.

Traffic & Lighting
Traffic & Lighting (T&L) maintains traffic signs, signals and city-owned street lights, and is responsible for approximately 160 signalized intersections and 2,400 street lights. T&L provides traffic control during paving and other construction activities and assists the South Bend Police Department in traffic control for special events in the city.
Sewers
Sewers oversees the repair and maintenance of approximately 700 miles of sanitary sewer and storm drains as well as 10,000 catch basins, inlets and drains. The team at Sewers monitors the condition of the sewer network by using specialized cameras which allows for the identification of issues to be addressed before they become bigger problems. Sewers also mows and upkeeps the City’s retention ponds.
