The third phase of the Western Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project begins Monday, July 1. Streetscape enhancements will be made to the four-block section of Western Avenue between Falcon and Dundee Streets. The project will include new curbs, sidewalks, pavement, decorative lighting, landscaping and the installation of a storm sewer.
The construction will be broken up into three phases:
Phase I (Up to 24 days)
During this phase, storm sewer and water main connecting to Western Avenue will be installed along Iowa Street. Iowa Street will be closed immediately north of Western Avenue. Additionally, the Western Avenue and Iowa Street intersection will close for up to 3 days at the end of this phase. When that intersection closes, the detour route will be along Olive, Sample, and Sheridan Streets.
Phase II (Up to 75 days)
During this phase, construction will occur on the south half of Western Avenue. Westbound Western Avenue will be open to traffic, but eastbound traffic will be detoured south on Sheridan Street, east on Sample Street, and north on Olive Street.
Phase III (Up to 60 days)
During this phase, construction will occur on the north half of Western Avenue. Westbound Western Avenue will remain open to traffic, while eastbound traffic will continue to be detoured south on Sheridan Street, east on Sample Street, and north on Olive Street.
This work will add to the streetscape improvements already completed on Western Avenue between Dundee Street and Bendix Drive in 2015 and between Bendix Drive and Olive Street in 2017. The streetscape improvements are part of implementation of the West Side Main Streets Plan to create an environment more inviting to commercial and residential investment.
The $2.6 million bid was awarded to Indiana Earth and will be funded through the City’s River West Development Area Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district and the Storm Sewer Fund. The anticipated completion date for this project is in early November.
