The City of South Bend has begun installing the first phase of wayfinding signage. The first phase is part of a comprehensive wayfinding system that will effectively assist visitors and residents in navigating to key South Bend destinations and attractions. The project is funded jointly by the City and Visit South Bend Mishawaka.
The City collaborated with community stakeholders and Corbin Design, a wayfinding and graphic design firm, to design a system that will help pedestrians and vehicles become better oriented with South Bend. The wayfinding signage system includes several sign types, each designed for a particular user. Larger vehicle-oriented signs will be installed close to major roads and highways, directing traffic to various parts of the community, while more intimate pedestrian kiosks will be installed in dense urban areas to guide visitors and residents to shops, restaurants and attractions within walking distance.
“South Bend continues its positive momentum with the installation of these wayfinding signs that will better guide tourists and visitors to our expanding attractions and destinations,” said Mayor James Mueller.
“The new wayfinding signage system is a welcome addition to South Bend and will create a stronger first impression for visitors,” said Rob DeCleene, executive director of Visit South Bend Mishawaka. “It’s also a great opportunity for residents to see the attractions and areas highlighted as featured experiences for our 4.8 million annual visitors.”
The first phase of signage installation should be complete by the end of the week with future phases to be installed over the next two to three years.
