Beginning Monday, July 29, the Michigan Street and Western Avenue intersection will close to vehicular traffic as part of the Michigan Street Improvement Project. Work will include the removal and replacement of crosswalks and pavement in the intersection. Detour routes will be Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard or Main Street to Wayne and Monroe Streets. The anticipated reopening date of the intersection is Wednesday, August 7, weather permitting.
Starting Tuesday, July 30, construction will begin on Michigan Street from the mid-block of Washington Street – Colfax Avenue to Colfax Avenue for the replacement of the concrete pavement. The Michigan Street entrance to the 1st Source Bank Center/DoubleTree by Hilton parking garage will only be accessible via Colfax Avenue. The entrance and exit lanes of the parking garage will be restricted to one lane starting Wednesday, July 31. The same lane will be used for entry and exit for the duration of 10 days. Construction on this half block will take up to 30 days to complete, weather permitting.
During construction, pedestrian access will be maintained to all businesses in the impacted areas.
The Michigan Street Improvement Project includes the replacement of deteriorated concrete pavement to the four blocks between Colfax and Western Avenues. Michigan Street will also be converted to angled street parking. In addition to pavement work, Michigan Street between Wayne Street and Western Avenue will receive new curbs, sidewalks and lighting. The signalized intersections at Michigan Street and Jefferson Boulevard, and Michigan Street and Washington Street will be changed to four-way stops due to low traffic volumes.
