The City of South Bend’s Division of Solid Waste is making changes to its trash and yard waste pickup service due to the COVID-19 crisis. To protect the health and safety of its drivers and to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, Solid Waste is implementing the following precautionary steps and service adjustments for the near future:
- Temporarily suspending extra pickups of yard waste paper bags. Additional yard waste bins can be requested at southbendin.gov/ywrequest or by calling 311. The cost is $2 per month per bin. Yard waste season begins April 1.
- Closing the City’s Organic Resources facility to the public, where residents were able to drop off yard waste for a nominal fee; however, residents can still pick up mulch and compost free of charge in the 24-hour self-loading area.
The City would like to remind residents that all trash must be bagged, and the lid of the bin must be closed completely to ensure bins will be picked up and emptied. No bags will be picked up outside or on top the of bin. If residents need a second trash bin, it can be requested at southbendin.gov/binrequest or by calling 311. An additional bin costs $7.09 per month.
Any extra trash or yard waste pickups already scheduled will take place as planned. Residents can still request extra pickups for furniture, large items and branches that are bundled or tied together as these items do not require the drivers to get out of the truck.
