The South Bend Fire Department is modernizing two fire stations within the City over the next several months. Fire Station 6 at 4302 Western Avenue and Fire Station 3 at 1805 McKinley Avenue will undergo upgrades.
Fire Companies are operating out of the following locations;
- Truck 6 remains at Fire Station 6 on Western Avenue. Engine 6 is temporarily located at Fire Station 4 on Olive Street. The work being done at St. 6 primarily focuses on providing equal restroom facilities for both sexes and adding safeguards to ensure contaminants from apparatus and firefighter’s gear do not enter the living space through the addition of the second set of sealed doors.
- During construction, there are no fire personnel operating out of Station 3. Engine 3 is operating out of the former Station 9 on Mishawaka Avenue and Truck 3 is positioned at the newer Fire Station 9 with Engine 9 and Medic 9 and Boat 1. The work being done at St. 3 involves the removal and replacement of the concrete drive, approach, apparatus bay and updating of drains and plumbing beneath. The Station’s two restroom and shower facilities will be upgraded, as well as kitchen cabinets and flooring throughout the station.
These projects are occurring simultaneously and are expected to be completed in April of this year. Fire Chief Todd Skwarcan said, “residents within the City should not notice any change in our service during the construction phase of these two fire stations – we look forward to providing updated spaces for our firefighters to live and work in, and for our neighborhoods to be proud of.”
As always, the public is welcome to tour the stations after the renovations are completed and the crews move back to their respective districts.
