Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Councilmember Jo Broden and Public Works Director Eric Horvath will hold a press conference to remind residents about the Curb & Sidewalk Reimbursement Program on Wednesday, June 6 at 1:00 p.m. at the intersection of Walsh and E Sorin Streets. The Curb and Sidewalk Reimbursement Program assists residential property owners in making needed repairs to curbs and sidewalks abutting their properties. This program can also be used to add new curbs and sidewalks where there are gaps in existing connections.
The reimbursement rate is $20 per linear foot for sidewalk and $15 per linear foot for curbs. All work must be done by licensed contractors bonded with the Department of Public Works. In addition, for certain properties the City will reimburse up to $950 for the construction of accessible sidewalk ramps in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
In 2017, 62 residential properties participated in the program, replacing 3,269 feet of sidewalk and 1,231 feet of curbing. Based on these properties, the average reimbursement for a resident was $1,347. Combined with Safe Routes to School and other initiatives, 24,915 feet of sidewalk and over 8,700 feet of curbing were replaced in the city last year.
To participate in the program, residents need to fill out an application and receive pre-approval from the City prior to any construction. For more information or to download an application, visit 311.southbendin.gov or call 311.
