March 14, 2025 โ The City of South Bend will begin construction on streetscape improvements along Ewing Avenue starting Monday, March 17 as part of the ongoing Rum Village Neighborhood Plan. The project aims to enhance safety, slow traffic and improve connectivity between the neighborhood, Walker Field and Rum Village Park.
Work includes a new 10-foot multipurpose path on the south side of Ewing Avenue, raised intersections and pedestrian safety bumpouts at the Walker Field shelter house, as well as at Webster and Walnut streets, and a new pedestrian and bicycle entrance to Rum Village Park. Construction will be completed in two phases:
Phase 1: March 17 to mid-June, weather permitting
Starting March 17, Ewing Avenue will be closed from Gertrude Street to Kemble Avenue for the first phase of construction. Drivers should follow the designated detour route via Gertrude and Kemble Avenues, using Dubail and Prairie Avenues as alternate routes. A detour map is attached.
During this phase, work will include:
- New curbs and sidewalks on the north side of Ewing Avenue
- Installation of raised intersections and pedestrian safety bumpouts
- Repaving of Ewing Avenue from Walnut to Webster streets
This phase is expected to be completed by early June, weather permitting.
Phase 2: Early June to end of July, weather permitting
The second phase of the project is scheduled to begin in early June and will run through the end of July, weather permitting. Work includes:
- Construction of a new 10-foot multipurpose path on the south side of Ewing Avenue
- Installation of a new staircase and ramp connection to Rum Village Park
- No street closures are anticipated during this phase of the project.
The project should be complete by end of July, weather permitting.
