In honor of Black History Month, the City of South Bend will release a series of billboards around the community intended to enrich residents’ understanding of local African American leaders who have contributed to South Bend’s history and culture. Each honoree will be recognized on three digital billboards located by the Linebacker Lounge, Ironwood Rd and State Road 23, and Lincolnway East from Monday, February 18 through Sunday, February 24.
Mayor Pete Buttigieg will celebrate Black History Month with a reception for this year’s billboard honorees on Thursday, February 21 at 6:00 p.m. at the Charles Black Community Center, 3419 W Washington St. The event is free and open to the public.
The African American leaders being honored are Pastor Hardie Blake, Jr.; Samuel L. Brown; John Collins, Jr.; Jonathan Davis, Jr.; Janice Hall; George Hill; Consuella Jackson-Hopkins; Carlton L. Lyons, M.D.; Pastor Jonathan Miller; Tasha Reed Outlaw; Maurice Scott; Marguerite Taylor; Pastor Rickardo Taylor, Sr.; Arielle Brandy; Antonius Northern; and Frankie’s BBQ.
