Mayor Pete Buttigieg today responded to a cluster of violent incidents last weekend in South Bend. “South Bend has not been immune to this year’s increase in violent crime across the United States, and the violence that occurred last week is unacceptable,” said Buttigieg. “The South Bend Police Department is addressing these cases, and tackling violence will also require continued community support and partnership. We need help from residents to close cases and prevent further cycles of violent retaliation.”
The city remains committed to the evidence-based Group Violence Intervention Strategy for addressing gang-related violence. Additionally, added public safety resources in the 2018 budget will go toward hiring additional street outreach personnel to address issues that lead to violence in the city.
“With compassion and support for all those impacted by these tragedies, we are standing together with a simple message: the violence must stop.”
Leaders from the City of South Bend will join community advocates at a “Community Speaks Out Against Violence” event this evening, November 28, at 5:00 p.m. at the Civil Rights Heritage Center (1040 W Washington St).
