BUTTIGIEG COMMENTS ON LOWEST UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN YEARS
Mayor Pete Buttigieg responded today to statistics indicating that South Bend’s unemployment rate remains near its lowest level in nearly two decades. According to a report released earlier this week by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, South Bend’s unemployment rate was 3.2 percent in May, showing continued economic strength following a reported 3.1 percent rate in April.
The last time South Bend’s unemployment rate reached 3.2 percent or lower was in April 1998.
“This month’s good news reflects the efforts of community leaders, small business owners, workers, and employers. Our city’s resilience and willingness to make difficult decisions has continued to pay off with the growth of good jobs in our area, even as we recognize there is more work to do,” said Buttigieg.
The United States unemployment rate is currently 4.1 percent. Indiana has a 2.8 percent unemployment rate.
