The City of South Bend was announced as the 2021 winner of the Richard H. Driehaus Form-Based Code Award, an annual prize for achievement selected by the Form-Based Codes Institute for the writing and implementation of zoning codes.
“The City zoning ordinance plays an important role in determining the future uses and design of areas throughout South Bend,” said Mayor James Mueller. “I’m thrilled that our planning team is being recognized for their diligent work to reform our zoning ordinance.”
The Department of Community Investment’s planning team developed and implemented a new, streamlined zoning ordinance that took effect in 2020 that has resulted in an increase in completed projects and considerably fewer variance requests.
“I want to acknowledge all of the long hours and dedication from the Planning Team to make this possible,” said Tim Corcoran, Director of Planning. “Everyone involved should be very proud of this accomplishment.”
