The City of South Bend and consultant Opticos Design, Inc. will lead a series of community workshops to develop a vision for the Portage & Elwood Neighborhood Center, starting with a presentation on April 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the Near Northwest Neighborhood, Inc.
Neighbors and community members are invited to attend the April 17 evening presentation and workshop to learn about the visioning process and provide input to help create the vision for the area. This meeting is the first in a series of engagement opportunities related to the project, including multiple chances for public involvement during a 4-day design charrette process May 6-9. Additional information will be shared closer to the start of the charrette.
The City believes the neighborhood center has the potential to have a larger community impact, anchoring positive activity on the Northwest side of the city. The framework is intended to serve as a guide to business and property owners, residents, developers, City staff, elected officials, and others in making investment, land use, and design decisions. The neighborhood center is bounded by Portage Ave. to the east, Elwood Ave. to the north, Wilber St. to the west, and Vassar Ave. & the former railroad tracks to the south.
