An incident this morning during a training exercise at the South Bend Police Department’s ordinance disposal facility in St. Joseph County led to the injury of South Bend Police Sergeant Harvey Mills. Sgt. Mills was treated at Memorial Hospital for serious injuries before being flown to Indianapolis for specialized care, and he is expected to recover.
At the request of Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski, the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms will conduct an investigation into the cause of the incident, which will parallel the standard internal review process.
After visiting the ER this afternoon, the Mayor and Chief Ruszkowski would like to thank the medical staff at Memorial Hospital, especially Dr. Scott Thomas; the EMS personnel who responded to the scene; and Sgt. Mills’ fellow police officers for their quick action and support for the officer and his family. The Mayor and Chief ask that residents keep the Mills and South Bend Police families in your thoughts, and please respect their privacy.
