The next phase of construction is now underway on the Howard Park Development Project. Work begins today on the new Howard Park Community Center and the ice trail, two of the improvements slated for this project. The park will be closed during construction, which is expected to take 56 weeks, weather permitting. At this time, the riverfront trail and all streets adjacent to Howard Park will remain open. Street and trail closures are not planned until spring, when work is scheduled for St. Louis Boulevard and the Riverfront Trail.
Three projects are part of this phase of construction:
Howard Park Redevelopment Project: In addition to the community center and the ice trail, the Howard Park Redevelopment Project will also include a one-story support facility, outdoor playground, café with indoor and outdoor seating, interactive water fountain and appurtenances.
Riverfront Trail Improvements: Event lawn with extended trail lighted connections to St. Louis Boulevard. Scheduled to start Spring 2019.
St. Louis Boulevard Improvements: New curbing, sidewalk, lighting, asphalt, on-street parking, watermain and installation of storm sewers. Scheduled to start Spring 2019.
The $18.8 million bid for the Howard Park Redevelopment Project was awarded to Larson Danielson Construction Company. Nearly 60% of the cost will be privately funded through grants and partnerships. Howard Park is one of 35 parks touched by My SB Parks and Trails, a combination of park, trail and riverfront upgrades that will fundamentally change the landscape of South Bend’s shared green spaces.
