Mayor Pete Buttigieg and the principals of South Bend-area high schools this month are encouraging eligible high school seniors to vote in the upcoming midterm elections. Mayor Buttigieg and the schools have engaged in the Cap, Gown, Vote! initiative through the organization Let America Vote. Schools are devoting resources to ensure that students who turn 18 by November 6 are able to register to vote. As part of the effort, Mayor Buttigieg will visit a Riley High School government class at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25, National Voter Registration Day.
“Voting is one of the most important civic duties our residents can fulfill,” said Mayor Buttigieg. “We need to make sure our young people are making their voices heard now because no one has a greater state in our future.”
“Our high schools are eager to participate in the Cap, Gown, Vote! initiative to encourage our students to not only register to vote, but to exercise their right to vote, if eligible, this November in the midterm election. We recognize that students who become voters early in life are more likely to continue to be voters as they get older,” stated Mansour Eid, South Bend Community School Corporation interim director of high schools.
“Voting the first time they are eligible is a gateway for young people to become active and engaged locally and nationally in our democratic process. Saint Joseph High School is happy to provide students the opportunity to register right here at school with peers facilitating the process,” said St. Joseph High School Principal John Kennedy.
Mayor Buttigieg has also signed onto the national Mayors For Our Lives pledge in an effort to further encourage young people to vote and participate in civic duties.
