The Department of Community Investment is accepting applications for the City’s Lead Protection Program grants. These grants are intended to reduce harm from lead paint, a major cause of childhood lead poisoning by identifying and controlling lead-based paint hazards in homes. Lead paint was not banned until 1978, and within South Bend city limits, 82.1% of all housing units were built prior to 1979. Over $2.9 million is available for South Bend residents, with some households receiving up to $15,000 in repairs.
Residents are eligible if their household makes less than 80% of area median income. Priority will be given to homes where children under six or pregnant people reside. Residents can find the application by calling 311 or accessing a paper application during regular business hours in the Department of Community Investment.
