On Friday, September 14, Colfax Avenue between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Main Street is set to fully reopen to two-lane vehicular traffic at the end of the day. For the past two months, parts of the north and south side of Colfax Avenue, along with the sidewalks, have been closed for the installation of new curbs and sidewalks, ADA curb ramps and storm sewers as part of the Cross Streets Project. Colfax Avenue from Main to Michigan Streets was also resurfaced with asphalt pavement.
Designed for the secondary streets in downtown South Bend, the 2018 Cross Streets Project will include new lighting, curbs, sidewalks and landscape improvements to Michigan Street between Colfax and LaSalle Avenues as well as Colfax Avenue between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Main Street. Continuing the momentum of attracting business development to downtown, this project is intended to enhance overall quality of life by contributing to a more vibrant and pedestrian friendly atmosphere.
