City to Invest $10M on 2025 Street Paving

The City of South Bend’s 2025 paving season kicks off this week and will go through mid-November. This year, the City is spending approximately $10 million on resurfacing and full reconstruction projects across more than 90 streets and covering a total of 48 lane miles.

Streets selected for paving are determined by a surface condition assessment that rates streets on a scale of 0 to 100. The assessment involves capturing video footage and using specialized software to analyze pavement distresses. Streets with the lowest scores are prioritized for paving each year.

Paving work will be completed by both City and contractor crews. Once work begins on a street, it typically takes three to five days to complete each segment. Streets requiring full reconstruction will take longer. Streets must be milled and prepped prior to paving and will be closed during working hours (7 am – 6 pm). Signage will be posted prior to the start of construction so residents and businesses are aware of the upcoming work.

Motorists should expect delays and possibly detours when a street is being paved. In construction zones, motorists are asked to slow down, use alternate routes and be mindful of workers.

In addition to paving, the City will conduct preventative maintenance activities such as crack sealing and microsurfacing throughout the season. Residents can follow the progress of paving work at southbendin.gov/paving.
