October 28, 2019
Mayor Pete Buttigieg will swear into service nearly 50 AmeriCorps members from across northern Indiana on Tuesday, October 29. The swearing-in ceremony, which begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Century Center Great Hall, will celebrate a new cohort of national service participants, several of whom are members of the City of South Bend’s AmeriCorps programs, and recognize the positive impact national service has on communities throughout the region. Mayor Buttigieg is expected to swear in members around 10:20 a.m. and will lead them in the AmeriCorps pledge.
In addition to Mayor Buttigieg, other speakers will include Serve Indiana’s Executive Director Marc McAleavey, St. Joseph County Commissioner and Robinson Community Learning Center’s Assistant Manager Andy Kostielney and City of South Bend’s Public Works Director Eric Horvath.
The City’s AmeriCorps programs currently house seven members in the South Bend Green Corps, which provides improvements and education resulting in more energy-efficient homes for lower-income residents, as well as four members supporting neighborhood outreach and lead safety programs in the Department of Community Investment.
AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). CNCS, the federal agency for service and volunteering, engages millions of Americans in service annually in more than 50,000 locations through AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and other programs.
