CONTACT: Matt Cruz, (574) 235-5849 mcruz@southbendin.gov FOR RELEASE: Monday April 10, 2017 BUTTIGIEG, CITY AND COUNTY PARKS ANNOUNCE COMMUNITY-WIDE BIKE EVENT Mayor Pete Buttigieg, in conjunction with St. Joseph County Parks Director Evie Kirkwood held a press event to announce the first annual Mayors’ Bike Ride on Monday, April 10 at 2pm at the Howard Park “Lodge Building” at 301 S Street Louis Boulevard. “Being bike-friendly is important to all of us for mobility, health, and recreation,” says South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg. “The Mayor’s Ride helps us showcase the St. Joseph River Waterway with its trails and bikeways, enhancing our whole region as a great place to live or visit. “ The Mayors’ Bike Ride will be held from 8 AM to Noon on Sunday, May 7. The family-friendly, recreational ride will begin at three locations: Red Barn, St. Patrick’s County Park; Howard Park, South Bend; and Central Park, Mishawaka. The route mostly follows trails along the St. Joseph River. “Our parks and bike trails provide great opportunities for families to enjoy the outdoors together,” says Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood. “This event serves as a great reminder to the community that biking provides a healthy transportation option for all ages” The event is free of charge, though a $10 per person donation is suggested to help Bike Michiana Coalition with their many education initiatives. All riders must also fill out a waiver. Sponsored by Visit South Bend Mishawaka and Bike Michiana Coalition, a non-profit bicycle-advocacy organization, the Mayors’ Ride encourages bicyclists of all ages to enjoy South Bend’s, Mishawaka’s and St. Joseph County’s connected bikeways and bicycle-friendly infrastructure.
