FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BUTTIGIEG AND NOTRE DAME WIRELESS INSTITUTE FACULTY TO BRIEF ON NEXT STEPS IN DEVELOPMENT OF PLATFORM FOR ADVANCED WIRELESS RESEARCH
Mayor Pete, City officials, Notre Dame’s Wireless Institute, and St. Joe Valley Metronet representatives will be on hand to discuss their site test as part of their push to build a city-scale wireless testbed on Monday March 20th at 2:45pm at O’Brien Recreation Center. “We’re working to establish South Bend as a global destination for wireless research and innovation, one of the fastest growing industries,” said Mayor Pete Buttigieg. “This opportunity offers the potential to deliver long-term job and economic growth to our city.” Part of the SBXG project, representatives from the South Bend Department of Innovation & Technology and Notre Dame conducted tests that demonstrate advanced wireless technologies including the next generations of Wi-Fi (MiMo), software defined radios, network drone control, and radar detection of drones. “This is an exciting step in our collaboration with the city,” said Nick Laneman, co-director of the University of Notre Dame’s Wireless Institute. “The expertise and experience of the university’s faculty coupled with the capabilities and collaboration of both the city and the State of Indiana puts us in the unique position to establish a hotbed for the wireless industry and create a city-scale testbed that will transform our workforce for the 21st century.” These tests demonstrate the ability of the city-university partnership to rapidly design and deploy wireless research equipment at City locations, and they represent a significant milestone in the process of applying to the National Science Foundation’s $100M program called Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research (PAWR). In addition to expanding their tests and capabilities, the team will begin engaging researchers throughout academia and industry, including several in the State of Indiana, to conceive of additional research experiments and refine platform requirements for SBXG. “As the advanced wireless industry is expected to grow faster than the rest of the economy, establishing a platform for advanced wireless will contribute to inclusive economic development, and ensure that our City and our State become leaders in the 21st century economy,” said Chief Innovation Officer Santiago Garces.
