South Bend Common Council members joined the Department of Public Works and Indiana Michigan Power to complete the installation of 70 lights as part of the 2017 Light Up South Bend program on Thursday, May 24 at 2:15 p.m. at 751 Allen Street. Due to hurricane recovery efforts around the country, Indiana Michigan Power crews were unable to complete the installation last year. During the press conference, Indiana Michigan Power crews installed a new street light as part of the 70 lights that are scheduled for the Near Northwest and River Park neighborhoods. This is the final light (#70) in this round of installations.
The 2018 program will be installed in Council Districts 3 and 6, which will be completed by the end of the year. Since its inception in November 2013, more than 290 lights have been installed throughout the city.
Intended to bring more lighting to parts of the city without adequate coverage, Light Up South Bend in an initiative that developed from community meetings held by the Council’s Residential Neighborhood Committee, chaired by Councilperson Karen White and vice chaired by Councilperson Tim Scott.
