This week Mayor James Mueller announced the appointment of Maurice “Moe” Scott as the new Director of Community Initiatives for the Office of the Mayor. The newly created position focuses on working with at-risk teens, assisting with Group Violence Intervention and overseeing the Community Initiatives Fund.
“Moe is a well-known community leader who has already made many contributions to our city,” said Mayor James Mueller. “I am excited for him to serve in this new role and connect our youth with additional resources.”
Scott was educated in South Bend, where he graduated from Adams High School and then served as an Air Force medic during Operation Desert Storm. After his military service, Scott attended Ancilla College and then began his career in South Bend’s Parks & Recreation Department, now called Venues Park & Arts.
He most recently served as the Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center. In that role, he was instrumental in facilitating many programs that benefit the community, including the Soldiers Basketball Program, the MADE Violence Prevention Program, and the Dream Academy.
Scott has been the recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award and the IHSAA Coach of the Year Award, among other accolades.
