Beginning Monday, August 19, the Michigan Street and Jefferson Boulevard intersection will close to vehicular traffic as part of the Michigan Street Improvement Project. Work will include the installation of bumpouts, and the removal and replacement of crosswalks and pavement in the intersection. Traffic signals will also be removed at this time. Detour routes will be Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard or Main Street to Wayne or Washington Streets. The anticipated reopening date of the intersection is Monday, September 9, weather permitting.
Replacement of the concrete pavement continues along Michigan Street. Work is currently underway on Michigan Street from the mid-block of Washington Street – Jefferson Boulevard to the mid-block of Jefferson Boulevard – Wayne Street. During construction, pedestrian access will be maintained to all businesses in the impacted areas.
Construction is complete on two blocks of Michigan Street. Michigan Street from Western Avenue to Wayne Street and Washington Street to Colfax Avenue has reopened to vehicular traffic with angle parking.
The Michigan Street Improvement Project includes the replacement of deteriorated concrete pavement to the four blocks between Colfax and Western Avenues. Michigan Street will also be converted to angled street parking. In addition to pavement work, Michigan Street between Wayne Street and Western Avenue will receive new curbs, sidewalks and lighting. The signalized intersections at Michigan Street and Jefferson Boulevard, and Michigan Street and Washington Street will be changed to four-way stops due to low traffic volumes.
